What is VoIP

Thank you for stopping by my website.  I built this site for consumers to access consolidated information on VoIP and a one-stop link to established VoIP service providers.  VoIP is best defined by describing both what it is and what it is replacing.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) - The transmission of voice communication as a digital product over the Internet.  (The Internet as we know it has been around for about 20 years).

Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), also known as Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) - The transmission of voice communication as an analog product over the copper wires/telephone lines which have been established and maintained for more than the last 100 years.

POTS is just that, the telephone that Alexander Gram Bell invented in the 1870's.  VoIP as we know it today began in the mid 1990's and has grown profoundly in the last 5 years.

2 recent "milestones" which seem to define the trend:

    1)  It was reported in late 2009 that AT&T filed a request with the FCC to terminate their requirement to maintain the POTS infrastructure.

    2)  Ibisworld Research reported that over the last decade (2000-2009) the VoIP industry's growth was 179035% compared to the next leading growth industry at 1656%.  In other words, VoIP's growth was more than 100 times the growth of any other industry in the decade ending 2009!
